Social Warming: The role of food and agriculture in a climate-changing world
In recent decades, the effects of climate change have resulted in an increasing frequency of extreme weather events. The resulting damage has severely impacted all socio-economic sectors, exacerbating global disparities, particularly regarding access to essential food resources. The COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and currently the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have caused, and continue to cause, resource shortages and price hikes for these and other related commodities, leading to disastrous consequences for the most vulnerable segments of society.
Within this context, the agricultural sector and the associated food systems play a pivotal role in mitigating the impacts of climate change on society, crop cultivation, livestock farming, and both human and animal nutrition, through the development of ethical and sustainable practices and techniques.
In light of the desire to explore potential agricultural and societal solutions, the workshop will focus on three key themes: Food Systems and Current Challenges, Agroecology as a Sustainable Climate Solution, and Applications of Technology in Cropping Systems.
This workshop is supported by the University of Pisa and the Department of Food, Agriculture, and Environment.
20th November: A comprehensive overview of food systems, policy, and agriculture, focusing on the current challenges for modern agriculture to increase sustainability and productivity. Notably, the discourse will explore the intricate interplay between society, policy, agricultural sustainability, and technological innovations in agriculture.
21st November: the workshop evolves into a panel test on bread and meat, discussing the role of sensory evaluation in judging food, from a customer’s perception. In this session, the different scents and texture of foods will be explored, focusing on the various components of the sensory sheets.
