Mattia has been a PhD student in Viticulture at the University of Pisa, Italy, since November 2024. His research focuses on applying bio-stimulants and phytohormones to grapevines to mitigate the detrimental effects of climate change on the quality of grapes. In particular, he is investigating how these substances influence plant physiology, water use efficiency and grape ripening dynamics such as sugar content, aroma and phenolic profile. His PhD project is co-financed by SCL Italia S.p.a., a company that produces innovative bio-stimulant formulations that he will also test in field conditions. Mattia took a Bachelor’s Degree/BS in Viticulture and Oenology, and a Master’s Degree/MA in “Sustainable Innovation in Viticulture and Oenology”, both at the University of Pisa. During the last months of his MS, he won a six-month fellowship in “Canopy management and vineyards characterization” at the University of Pisa. This, was his first introduction to scientific research and gained hands-on experience in experimental vineyard work, including the analysis of vineyard variability and its effects on grapevine growth and ripening. Also, Mattia has developed strong skills in data collection, fieldwork, and laboratory analysis.
During his studies, he also worked in two wineries, broadening his technical skills while applying his theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges.
Beyond his academic work, Mattia has practical experience from his family-owned winery that fueled his passion for wine since his early age. This background motivated him to focus his study on the development of science-based solutions to help the wine industry adapt to climate change.
