Prof. Daniele Antichi and Dr. Silvia Pampana
Research Field: Agronomy and Crop production
Gabriele is a PhD student in Agronomy and Crop production at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment (DAFE), University of Pisa. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science in 2021, followed by a Master degree in Agri-Environmental Production and Agroecosystem Management in 2024. Since then, he has completed a postgraduate research programme, working as a research fellow at the Center for Agri-Environmental Research “Enrico Avanzi” for a 18-month period. During that time, he carried out experimental on-station activities, including trial organization and monitoring, field measurements, sample collection, and laboratory processing and analyses to evaluate the main crop agronomic traits, thereby developing a strong interest in weed detection and identification, as well as alternative weed management strategies.
His research is co-founded by two projects, namely Sunrise and Agrofig.
Sunrise is an Agroecology Partnership project, committed to promoting agroecology across Europe. The project supports farmers in adopting sustainable solutions that enhance productivity, while protecting the environment.
Agrofig is a PRIMA project that aims to revitalize agroforestry in the Mediterranean by integrating fig tree crops with cover and forage crops.
He will be studying how agroecological principles can affect sustainable transitions of the overall agri-food system by acting upstream at the field level to foster the adoption of innovative agronomic practices among farmers. This will be possible through the implementation of Living Labs, experimental activities that usually take place in real farming settings. Living Labs are a key instrument for scaling up these virtuous innovations from a local level to a broader scale. Stakeholders along the entire foodshed are actively involved in co-designing and co-developing these innovative solutions within a participatory framework, taking into account governance patterns and socio-political aspects as well.
